100 illegal immigrants arrested in Osun as govt tightens security

Against the backdrop of the arrest of ISWAP suspects during bomb-making training in Ilesa, and the reported infiltration of South-West forests by bandits, no fewer than 100 illegal immigrants, who gained entry into Osun State in groups, have been arrested.

The Guardian learnt that the foreigners, who were apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), could not produce any valid travel document and offer reasons for their presence in the state.

A credible security source hinted: “I will not disclose the location of arrest for security reasons, and not to raise apprehension in the community. They were arrested, and the Osun State government was informed.

“The state government was involved as they provided NIS buses to convey the suspected illegal immigrants.”

However, calls put through to the spokesperson for NIS, Osun State Command, Olu Moyosade, on the matter were neither taken nor returned, same with text messages that were not replied.

But addressing journalists, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, confirmed the development, vowing that the state government would not leave any stone unturned in beefing up security to protect life and property.

He said: “100 foreigners were arrested weeks ago before the arrest of suspected ISWAP members in Ilesa. We are on top of the security situation, our residents should not panic.

“The issue of security is not something that we can disclose fully. In Osun, we have always been proactive, which led to the arrest of suspected terrorists in Ilesa. The state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, including our service chiefs are on top of security situation in the state. We are equally rejigging the Amotekun security outfit to be more effective.”

He lauded the Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, for raising the alarm over bandits’ invasion of South-West forests.
