As Nigeria prepares for its first state visit to the United Kingdom in 37 years at the invitation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on the 18th and 19th of March, 2026, expectations are high that this engagement will move beyond ceremonial pomp and diplomacy to translating into tangible commitments and steps toward ending the prevalent and escalating violence across Nigeria. At a time when citizens and communities continue to grapple with insecurity, displacement, and loss of lives and livelihoods, this visit represents a crucial opportunity to declare on a global stage the arrival of a reset Nigeria with priorities around peace, unity, social justice and prosperity for all.
So why the fuss about a visit?
For PSJ UK, this State Visit should be a 'State Visit for Peace across all states of Nigeria' - It should be one that produces dividends of actual peace for the Nigerian people - It should be much more than royal hospitality and a diplomatic event; it should be a moment of true accountability and genuine renewed hope. As an organization committed to peace-building and social justice advocacy, PSJ UK strongly believes that sustainable peace can only be achieved when governance structures protect human dignity, uphold the rule of law, and prioritize the safety of every citizen, everywhere.
Nigeria is navigating one of the most complex periods in its history since inception by the British and in its democratic journey, battling insecurity, economic strain, and widening concerns about social justice. Consequently, this visit offers an opportunity for more than ceremonial grandeur; it presents a key moment to rekindle strategic partnerships of sovereign equals that could influence genuine peace-building, economic recovery, and institutional strengthening.
PSJ UK calls on His Majesty's Government (HMG) and The Government of Nigeria (GoN),the diplomatic community, policymakers, diaspora community leaders and other stakeholders to ensure that the visit results in clear frameworks for genuine and speedy addressing of the killings, conflict prevention, youth engagement, wider community engagement in peace and strengthened security reforms. PSJ UK particularly emphasizes the importance of including grassroots voices in peace conversations and peace actualisation, recognizing that communities (supported by government) often hold the most practical solutions to the conflicts they face.
Peace and Unity remain the pillars of the foundation upon which Nigeria's national progress was built and must be reinforced. Nigeria must seize this moment to choose genuine peace-building and religious diversity over division and true justice over impunity. If this state visit is to be worth anything, it must deliver a refreshed UK-Nigeria Security & Defence partnership - It must come a long way further from what Theresa May as Prime Minister signed in 2018 and must deliver tangible security outcomes that delivers peace in-deed on the ground in Nigeria.
This is a significant opportunity for the Nigerian leaders to show that Nigeria has arrived on the global stage as a respected national player and the true giant of Africa with so much more positive outputs to contribute to the world.
