The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has sustained intensive aerial surveillance operations to assist in tracking and rescuing the school children and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area in Oyo State. The victims were captured on May 15 during a violent raid by bandits targeting three schools: Baptist Nursery and Primary School (Yawota), Community Grammar School (Esiele), and L.A. Primary School. Tragically, one of the teachers was killed while in captivity.
The security update was disclosed during a meeting between Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and top military officials, including Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh (representing the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke).
Key Highlights of the Security Operation
Immediate Intel Generation: Governor Makinde revealed that the NAF deployed its surveillance assets immediately after the abduction was reported. The real-time intelligence gathered from these flights is actively guiding ground forces and sister security agencies in their search-and-rescue efforts.
State-Owned Aerial Assets: The Governor noted that the NAF's intervention has been crucial, as Oyo State's newly acquired aerial security assets are currently being assembled at the NAF Base in Lagos. These state owned platforms were purchased in consultation with the Air Force to guarantee proper pilot training, engineering support, and long-term maintenance.
Federal Reinforcements: Following widespread public outcry, including nationwide protests by educators and a mandate from the House of Representatives, President Bola Tinubu has approved a special rescue team and the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to fortify security in the region.
Air Vice Marshal Suleh expressed the Air Force's solidarity with the people of Oyo State, reaffirming that the military remains fully committed to collaborating with all security stakeholders until every remaining hostage is safely returned home. Meanwhile, the state government has urged residents to remain patient and cooperative as operations continue.
