Breaking News | Oyo Under Siege: Questions Rise Over Security and Justice

Barely ten days after the last violent incident, Oyo State has again been shaken by an attack that underscores Nigeria’s deepening security crisis. What was once considered unlikely in the South-West is fast becoming a grim reality.

On January 16, fear spread through the Ogunmakin community near Ibadan, after armed bandits attacked Aqua Triton Company, an agricultural facility. The assailants abducted an Indian expatriate and killed a police officer assigned to protect the farm, leaving residents and workers in shock.

The victim, 42-year-old Renjith Pillai, was reportedly inspecting crops when about ten gunmen struck in broad daylight. Police Inspector Imoobe Prester confronted the attackers in an effort to stop the abduction, but was shot during the exchange. He later died from his injuries. The gunmen fled into the surrounding bush with their captive and the officer’s rifle.

The officer’s death has drawn fresh grief within the police community and among locals who see his sacrifice as a stark reflection of the dangers facing security personnel and rural communities alike.

This attack follows closely on the killing of five forest guards at Old Oyo National Park in Oloka, Olorunsogo axis, by suspected insurgents. Together, the incidents raise troubling questions about how armed groups are accessing Oyo State, the routes they are exploiting, and why farming communities and forest zones appear increasingly exposed.

While security agencies have launched search operations with the support of local hunters and vigilantes, concerns persist beyond immediate rescue efforts. For peace and social justice advocates, the killings and abductions point to deeper failures in intelligence gathering, rural security, and proactive protection.

Until these gaps are urgently addressed, fear risks spreading faster than justice in communities meant to sustain life, livelihoods, and hope.
