A Catholic Bishop in Niger State, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, has issued a public appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging urgent action to address persistent insecurity in Agwara and Borgu Local Government Areas.
In the appeal, the Bishop acknowledged recent government interventions that led to the safe recovery of abducted schoolchildren but warned that insecurity remains widespread across several communities. He noted that bandit attacks continue to disrupt daily life, undermine education, and prevent farming activities, leaving families displaced and fearful.
According to the Bishop, parts of the affected areas are experiencing a breakdown of law and order, with criminal groups operating freely and overwhelming existing security arrangements. He stressed that the continued displacement of residents and farmers poses a serious humanitarian risk, particularly as the farming season approaches.
The Bishop called on the Federal Government to establish a military base in Agwara Local Government Area and strengthen security infrastructure through fortified police stations and checkpoints. He emphasised the need for a proactive, well-resourced, and mobile security presence capable of preventing attacks rather than responding after harm has occurred.
In his video appeal, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna speaks directly to these concerns and urges urgent action to protect communities in Agwara and Borgu Local Government Areas.
Describing the situation as more than a local challenge, the Bishop urged the government to act decisively to restore public confidence and protect vulnerable communities. He appealed for collaboration between federal authorities, security agencies, and local stakeholders to achieve lasting peace.
The appeal adds to growing calls for a comprehensive and technology-driven security strategy to address Nigeria’s evolving security threats and ensure the safety of communities across Niger State.
