In a concerning development for security in Northwest Nigeria, notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has reportedly re-emerged to launch new offensives in Sokoto State. This comes just weeks after a significant military operation led by the United States targeted his network in December 2025
Survival and Retaliation
Despite the intensity of the December airstrikes, which utilized advanced weaponry including Tomahawk missiles, sources indicate that Turji survived the bombardment with only minor injuries. Following a brief period of silence, he has now initiated a violent campaign to reclaim territory in Sokoto’s eastern district. On Monday night, his fighters targeted Tidibale village in the Isa Local Government Area. The assault forced a mass exodus of residents as gunmen moved through the community, marking a clear attempt by the kingpin to re-establish dominance after his group suffered heavy losses.
Impact of the December Strikes
The joint U.S.-Nigeria operation dealt a massive blow to armed groups in the region, particularly the Lakurawa sect. Reports confirm that approximately 155 fighters were killed, primarily at a camp in Tangaza where back-to-back missile strikes occurred. Additionally, nearly half of the Lakurawa group's cattle, which served as a primary source of funding, was destroyed during the raids. The strikes focused on three key districts including Isa, Tangaza, and Tambuwal. While Tangaza is known as a Lakurawa hub, Isa remains the primary enclave for Turji’s operations.
Persistent Threats in the Northwest
The resilience of these groups remains a major challenge. Even after the heavy losses in December, the Lakurawa group carried out a brutal attack in Kebbi State on New Year’s Eve, resulting in 21 civilian deaths. Security analysts note that while the U.S. intervention significantly degraded the capabilities of the Lakurawa, it did not target other factions like Boko Haram or Ansaru. The latest activities in Tidibale suggest that Turji’s survival has served as a catalyst for renewed coordination among his remaining fighters. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as more information surfaces regarding the long-term effectiveness of foreign military intervention in the region.
