PSJ UK Raises Alarm Over Drone Attacks on Nigerian Soldiers.

Troops of the Nigerian Army under Joint Task Force North East (Operation Hadin Kai) were targeted in a drone attack by terrorists operating in Borno State, leaving three soldiers wounded. The engagement took place during clearance operations and represents a worrying escalation in the tactics used by terror groups in the region.

According to security sources, the soldiers were advancing on suspected ISWAP hideouts when they came under attack by an armed drones, a tactic hitherto rarely seen in the ongoing conflict until now. Despite the drone strike, the troops continued their operation, maintaining control of the area and repelling subsequent ground assaults.

A New Phase in the Conflict

The use of armed drones by terrorist groups marks a significant escalation in the insurgency. Previously characterised largely by ambushes, kidnappings, and guerrilla attacks, this development suggests that the capabilities of these groups are evolving beyond conventional ground tactics.

Dr. Richard Ikiebe, a PSJUK Director and a security and defence analyst, underscores that this is not merely another battlefield incident but a strategic warning sign of changing dynamics:

* Drone warfare indicates elevated sophistication. The deployment of unmanned systems for offensive purposes moves the conflict beyond traditional ground engagements.

* Intelligence penetration raises concern. Evidence that insurgents were able to vacate positions swiftly before the military’s arrival — yet still mount a targeted aerial attack — points to potential information leakage or insider aid.

* This escalation cannot be ignored. What was once described as “banditry” has moved into a domain requiring national strategic attention. These groups now appear better armed, better informed and more technically capable than before.

Dr. Richard notes that the evolution of tactics should alarm not just military planners but also the government and policymakers, as it signals the insurgency’s growth into a more complex and potentially internationalised theatre of conflict.

Implications for National Security

The emergence of drone attacks holds several implications:

* Troop Safety: Traditional ground forces are now vulnerable to aerial threats once exclusive to state actors.

* Intelligence Security: Faster dissemination of field intelligence to terrorists suggests weaknesses in operational security.

* Operational Strategy: Nigeria’s military may need to reconsider its current counter-insurgency paradigm, particularly in electronic warfare and air defence.

“The fact that these drones could operate with such apparent precision and coordination raises questions about both the acquisition of this technology by insurgents and the security of military communications,” Dr. Richard observed.

What Should Government and Military Do?

Drawing on the foregoing, PSJ UK suggests the following strategic priorities:

1. Strengthen Air Defence & Counter-Drone Capabilities

The military must invest in systems capable of detecting and neutralising small unmanned aerial systems before they pose a threat.

2. Harden Operational Intelligence Security

Enhanced vetting and encryption of military communications are critical to prevent internal compromise. In addition, deploy trained agencies and operatives to smoke out compromised infiltrators.

3. Review Tactics and Training

The armed forces must adapt to the reality of a multi-domain battlefield by integrating electronic warfare, drone countermeasures, and real-time surveillance with ground operations.

4. Public Transparency & Accountability

A transparent briefing on how terrorists are obtaining and deploying such technology would build public confidence and inform national security reforms.

Conclusion

The ramp up to drone strikes in Borno State is more than a tactical anomaly — it is a strategic turning point in Nigeria’s fight with non-state actor terrorists. As these groups expand their arsenal and operational reach, national security strategy must evolve to meet and advance beyond these new challenges. A failure to do so risks further escalation, greater casualties, and further weakening of state authority in vulnerable regions.
