In a decisive move to curb escalating violence, the Nigerian military has established a direct security presence in the Alkaleri Local Government Area (LGA) of Bauchi State. This deployment follows a period of persistent banditry that has displaced residents and disrupted peace in the region.
A Direct Response to Security Breaches
The intervention was formalized on Tuesday when Major General Eyitayo Foluso Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 3 Division, met with Governor Bala Mohammed at the Bauchi Government House.
The GOC confirmed that the military’s takeover of security operations in Alkaleri is a direct order from the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). This action responds to the Governor's recent urgent appeal to the Federal Government for assistance after several communities were overrun by armed groups.
Strategic Measures for Lasting Peace
The military’s strategy involves a multifaceted approach to restore order:
- Dual-Track Strategy: Deployment of both kinetic (military force) and non-kinetic (community engagement/support) methods to address the root causes of instability.
- Intensified Surveillance: Increased troop presence and patrols at known flashpoints to monitor and disrupt criminal movements.
- Collaborative Efforts: Enhanced coordination between the army and other security agencies to ensure a unified front against insurgents.
- Logistical Reinforcement: Mobilization of additional manpower and equipment to maintain a long-term presence in the area.
Protecting Vulnerable Communities
Governor Bala Mohammed welcomed the intervention, noting that the invasion of Alkaleri had created a climate of fear. The GOC assured the state leadership that the army is committed to dismantling criminal hideouts and ensuring that Alkaleri no longer serves as a "safe haven" for bandits.
By prioritizing intelligence-driven operations, the military aims to transition the region from a state of crisis back to a peaceful environment where displaced residents can safely return to their homes.
