Improving Security in Kaduna: Insights and Recommendations

On 9 October 2024, we hosted a webinar themed "Kaduna State: The Impact of Peacebuilding and Development", bringing together leading voices in the field of conflict resolution. Facilitated by PSJ UK's CEO, Ayo Adedoyin, the discussion featured insights from subject matter experts Thompson Anyip and Esther Abiodun, who provided a detailed analysis of the ongoing security situation and peacebuilding efforts in Kaduna.

During the webinar, the speakers acknowledged the recent improvements in security across several local governments, with particular attention to the significant military presence along the Kaduna to Kafanchan route. The over 22 checkpoints manned by the Army, Navy, and Air Force have been instrumental in curbing attacks. However, issues surrounding the effectiveness of police forces and lingering distrust from the community, especially during El-Rufai's administration, were raised as critical concerns.

The discussion also highlighted the uneven distribution of security resources, with smaller communities in areas like Kajuru and Kauru being more vulnerable to attacks. Overstretched security forces are struggling to provide adequate coverage for these regions, making it clear that a more comprehensive approach is needed. Local community involvement, according to the experts, is key to successful peacebuilding initiatives, as these residents possess valuable knowledge of their own challenges.

The webinar also pointed to the Kaduna Peace Commission as a potential ally for PSJ UK in advancing peace efforts. However, the short tenure of leadership at the Commission, such as Priscilla Nkut’s recent departure, underscores the need for stable governance in navigating complex peacebuilding landscapes.

In light of the escalating farmer-herder conflict and the ongoing violence that has severely impacted food security in the region, the experts recommended adapting successful peace strategies from other regions, such as Jos, to Kaduna’s unique context. Supporting both farmers and herders is seen as vital to ensuring long-term stability.

The session concluded with a call to action for PSJ UK to continue its advocacy for justice and support local communities affected by violence. Collaboration with the Kaduna Peace Commission and engaging grassroots stakeholders will be essential in driving lasting peace and development in Kaduna.
