Nigeria @ 65: A Call for Independence From Insecurity - A Generation Rising for a Safer Tomorrow

As Nigeria marks 65 years of independence, we stand at a defining moment in our nation’s story. Independence is more than a date on the calendar; it is a promise of freedom, dignity, and opportunity for every citizen. Yet, for too many Nigerians today, that promise remains unfulfilled.

Across our communities, insecurity continues to cast a long shadow over daily life. Banditry drives families from their homes. Kidnapping robs children of their education. Insurgency and terrorism claim innocent lives and shatter dreams. True independence cannot exist when fear rules the land.

At PSJ UK, we believe this 65th anniversary must mark the beginning of a new chapter, one where Nigeria’s youth rise boldly to reclaim the future. Our generation has the power, the passion, and the purpose to demand independence from insecurity, independence from banditry, independence from terrorism, and independence from insurgency.

This is the time for us to reject hopelessness and champion change. Through civic engagement, advocacy, innovation, and unity, young Nigerians at home and in the diaspora can shape policies, hold leaders accountable, and help build the safer, more just nation we all deserve.

Nigeria’s independence story is still being written, and it is our story to finish. A new generation is rising, one that will not be defined by fear but by courage, vision, and action. Together, we can build a Nigeria where every child can walk to school without fear, every farmer can till their land in peace, and every community can thrive in safety.

This Independence Day, let us celebrate not just how far we’ve come, but how much further we can go when freedom from fear becomes the right of every Nigerian.
