A prominent bandit leader, Bello Turji, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the recent wave of violent encounters with security forces across Sokoto and Zamfara states. However, in the same breath, the militant kingpin indicated open readiness to enter peace talks with the Nigerian authorities.
The remarks were made in a video clip circulating on social media, which was allegedly filmed on June 20, 2026.
Clashes in the North-West
Speaking in Hausa, a masked individual identified as Turji appeared in the footage flanked by heavily armed men outfitted in military camouflage. The speaker addressed the ongoing armed conflicts plaguing the North-West region, accusing opposing factions of provoking the violence.
According to the speaker, local communities have faced severe aggression, including the theft of cattle and targeted killings in:
- Shinkafi (Zamfara State)
- Sabon Birni (Sokoto State)
- Surrounding border communities
The individual asserted that his faction launched counter-attacks purely as a retaliatory measure against those terrorizing their people, claiming, "Allah granted us victory over these people who are carrying out these operations and driving away our livestock."
Dialogue vs. Continued Warfare
The video concluded with a direct message to the Nigerian government regarding the future of the conflict. The speaker made it clear that the group is willing to lay down arms if the government chooses a diplomatic route.
“If the government is ready for negotiation, we are also ready for negotiation,” the speaker stated.
Conversely, the kingpin issued a stern warning that military pressure would be met with equal resistance, declaring that his fighters remain fully prepared for an extended armed confrontation if state-led military offensives persist.
