PSJ UK EXTENDS CONDOLENCES TO CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE’S FAMILY, CALLS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE & MEDICAL ACCOUNTABILITY
“I will never survive the loss of my child.”
These haunting words from renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie speak not only to a mother’s unbearable grief, but to a deeper crisis of justice, accountability, and trust in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Chimamanda has accused a Lagos-based hospital of negligence following the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu, after a routine medical procedure. According to her account, Nkanu was referred to a hospital described as “the best” for an MRI and central line insertion ahead of a planned transfer to the United States for advanced care. During sedation, an excessive dose of anesthesia was allegedly administered. What followed; loss of responsiveness, seizures, cardiac arrest, and eventual death. A tragedy that should never have happened.

This is not merely a private loss; it is a public justice issue, even for the poor and unpopular families bereaving due to negligence, quackery and injustice in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
When medical systems fail without consequence, lives, especially the most vulnerable are put at risk. No parent should lose a child due to preventable errors. No institution should operate without accountability. And no society committed to justice should look away.
PSJ UK stands in solidarity with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her family and other families in Nigeria who have experienced such unnecessary loss.
We join her in demanding justice, transparency, and accountability from the anaesthesiologists involved and from medical institutions in Nigeria.
We call for an independent investigation and systemic reforms that prioritize patient safety, ethical standards, and human dignity.
Justice in healthcare is not optional.
It is a right.
