The International Organisation for Peacebuilding and Social Justice (PSJ UK) acknowledges the arrival of United States personnel in northern Nigeria under a limited, non-combat security cooperation framework.
This development has generated significant public debate. Some Nigerians express legitimate concerns about sovereignty, while others view the deployment as long-overdue international engagement in response to a protracted security crisis. It is important to state clearly that the presence of U.S. personnel is at the invitation of the Nigerian government.
Nigeria’s security crisis is complex and multi-layered, encompassing insurgency, Islamist jihadism (homegrown and transnational), terrorism, banditry and communal violence. However described, the persistence and expansion of these threats over the past two decades reflect serious governance and accountability failures.
Large numbers of citizens across religious and ethnic lines, (including Christian communities in parts of the Middle Belt and Muslim communities in Northwest and Northeast), have suffered killings, displacement, and destruction with insufficient justice or deterrence. The primary responsibility of government is the protection of its people, and impunity has significantly undermined public confidence.
From the fore-going, PSJ-UK welcomes the arrival of the US contingent to Nigeria. However, foreign military cooperation can only be constructive if it delivers measurable civilian protection, strengthens intelligence coordination, and substantially reduces harm to the suffering populace. External assistance must complement, not substitute for institutional reform, domestic accountability, and sovereign responsibility. Any foreign deployment should be transparent, clearly mandated, non-partisan, and time-bound.
According to PSJ UK CEO, Mr. Ayo Adedoyin, “Military cooperation must remain focused on protecting civilians and restoring security in a manner consistent with Nigeria’s sovereignty and constitutional order.”
PSJ UK therefore calls for:
- Full transparency regarding the scope, mandate, and duration of the U.S. deployment
- Sustained and structured coordination between Nigerian authorities and international partners
- Immediate investigation and prosecution of perpetrators, financiers, and collaborators of violence
- Strengthened protection for vulnerable communities across religious and ethnic lines
- Comprehensive institutional reforms to end impunity and rebuild public trust
Nigeria’s long-term stability will not be secured by foreign military presence alone. It will depend on accountable governance, effective justice systems, and credible national leadership committed to the protection of all citizens.
PSJ UK remains committed to peace, security, and social justice for all Nigerians. Civilian protection must be practical, measurable, and anchored in human dignity.
