Spotlighting the Truth: Community-Led Reporting for Change

Real change starts when everyday people are empowered to speak out, share the truth, and hold those in power accountable.

Across both Nigeria, communities face growing challenges — from a lack of government transparency to systemic injustices, broken services, and rights violations. Yet too often, these stories remain untold or unheard.

That’s why we’re launching a powerful new initiative: the Community-Led Monitoring & Reporting Project — a unique UK-Nigeria collaboration that trains citizen journalists to shine a light on governance failures and human rights abuses, wherever they occur.

What the Project Involves

We are developing a 6-week digital training programme for aspiring citizen reporters and local activists in both countries. Through this course, participants will gain:

  • Practical storytelling skills

  • Ethical and accurate reporting techniques

  • Digital tools for real-time documentation

  • Connections to trusted local and international media outlets

Selected trainees will also receive basic reporting equipment (e.g. recorders, data allowances, smartphones where possible) and ongoing mentorship.

A UK-Nigeria Collaboration

This project is grounded in cross-border solidarity and mutual learning. Here's how it works:

  • In Nigeria, local reporters will expose incidents of election rigging, corruption, violence, forced displacement, and government inaction in crisis areas.

  • In the UK, members will analyse, compile, and amplify these reports, helping to shape powerful narratives for advocacy, policy engagement, and media exposure.

Together, this growing network of grassroots reporters and community advocates will serve as a vital engine for PSJ UK’s international advocacy, delivering timely, credible evidence to policymakers, human rights organisations, and global media platforms.

Why It Matters

  • Amplifies voices that are often silenced, especially in underrepresented communities.

  • Strengthens accountability by gathering on-the-ground evidence of governance failures and human rights violations.

  • Equips communities with tools to tell their own stories and shape their futures.

  • Creates a digital bridge between the UK and Nigeria, showing how struggles for justice are connected globally.

How You Can Help

Your support can:

  • Sponsor a trainee for just £250

  • Equip a rural journalist with a starter kit for £500

  • Help us roll out the full training for 20–25 participants across both countries
